Biking

Biking is a convenient, healthy, environmentally friendly, and low-cost way to travel to, from, and around campus.

Bicycle Friendly University

Bicycle Friendly University logo

The University of Pittsburgh is proud to be one of 204 colleges and universities recognized by the League of American Bicyclists, and as of 2025, one of only 31 institutions designated as a Gold-Level Bicycle Friendly University (BFU). This recognition reflects Pitt’s commitment to promoting and enabling safe, accessible, and convenient bicycling on and around campus. Recent initiatives include our leading partnership with POGOH, which has provided more than one million free bike-share rides to Pitt community members, expanded free on-bike education opportunities for riders of all experience levels, and close collaboration with the city, state, and PRT to improve key corridors such as Bigelow Boulevard and Terrace Street. Looking ahead, Pitt is committed to achieving Platinum BFU status by 2033 through continued work on bicycle infrastructure, strengthened partnerships with the city, and expanded high-quality bike parking across campus.

Registration

Register your bike, e-bike, or e-scooter for free through Pitt's BikeIndex. Registering your bike or scooter deters theft, provides proof of ownership, and could help you recover your bike if retrieved from a theft.

Parking and Storage

From outdoor racks and lockers to indoor bike rooms, there are plenty of safe and secure bike parking options available to you. Explore bike parking maps and learn how to register for a bike locker or bike room.

POGOH

Students, faculty, and staff at Pitt’s Oakland campus are able to use POGOH, Pittsburgh’s bike-sharing system, for free during the academic year! Enjoy unlimited 30-minute rides on POGOH’s pedal bikes to and from campus via bike.

The Pitt Bike Cave

Swoop in to the The Pitt Bike Cave next time you’re biking through the Posvar Passage. Near the large yellow sculpture (officially named "Light Up" by artist Tony Smith) and tucked beneath Posvar Hall, you’ll find the Cave, an outdoor student-run bike co-op that serves the Pitt community.
