Residential Handbook

The Residential Handbook (PDF) is a comprehensive reference for everyday campus life. The handbook is available online or from Panther Central. If you can't find an answer to your question in the handbook, contact Panther Central.

Summary of Key Policies

The following are not comprehensive statements of the University's policies on each topic. You should refer to the relevant policy in your copy of the Student Code of Conduct and Judicial Procedures.

Alcohol

In accordance with Pennsylvania state law, you must be at least 21 years old to possess, consume, or transport alcoholic beverages. In University housing buildings, all alcoholic beverages must be registered with the desk attendant. The amount registered per person per week is strictly regulated.

Residents are responsible for their actions and the actions of their visitors. Should any damages or injuries result during or after the consumption of alcoholic beverages in University housing, residents hold responsibility.

Damages

You are financially responsible for damages you cause to University property. If a reasonable investigation cannot attribute damage to one or more individuals, responsibility may be assigned to entire living units. Your entire living unit may be declared responsible, resulting in review of guest or floor privileges.

Harassment

All students have the right to be free from harassment and discrimination based upon, but not limited to, several factors. These factors include sexual orientation, color, race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, handicap, marital status, age, or veteran status. Individuals and groups can be targets of harassment, and it can occur via telephone, mail, e-mail, or face-to-face.

Victims of harassment should immediately report the incident. Reports can be made to their resident director, the Division of Student Affairs (412-648-1006), or the Office of Affirmative Action (412-648-7860).

Quiet Hours

Students are required to observe Quiet Hours in residence halls as follows. At all other times, students are expected to maintain a level of reasonable quietness.

  • Sunday–Thursday, 10 p.m. to 8 a.m.
  • Friday and Saturday, 11 p.m. to 8 a.m.

Smoking

The entire campus of the University of Pittsburgh is smoke-free, including residence halls and apartments.

Substance and Drug Abuse

Student use, possession, distribution, or sale of narcotics, dangerous drugs, hallucinogens, or controlled substances is prohibited in all University buildings. Student possession of drug paraphernalia that can be linked to drug activity is prohibited.

Please see the Residential Handbook for the University's visitation policy.
