The University of Pittsburgh values every member of the Pitt community, striving to fully include all students into on-campus housing. Gender Inclusive Housing allows students to live with whomever they choose regardless of gender, sex, gender identity, or expression. Available in select buildings for first-year and upper-class students, Gender Inclusive Housing options are in accordance with University housing processes.
First-Year Student Gender Inclusive Housing
Gender Inclusive Housing options are provided to first-year students based upon availability. First-Year students requesting to reside in Gender Inclusive Housing are assigned regardless of gender, sex, gender identity, or expression. First-Year students who are interested in Gender Inclusive Housing should contact Panther Central directly upon admission to the University. View more information about our First-Year Student housing application and assignment process.
Non-guaranteed First-Year Students
Gender Inclusive Housing options are provided to non-guaranteed first-year students based upon availability. Students will be placed on a waiting list in the order in which their housing contract and deposit are received. Wait list students are not guaranteed on-campus accommodations. Students with specific Gender Inclusive Housing requests should contact Panther Central directly upon admission to the University. Notification of possible on-campus housing does not usually occur before late June.
Upper-Class Gender Inclusive Housing Selection
Gender Inclusive Housing is available for upper-class students in apartment-style residence halls. Housing selection for upper-class students takes place each Spring Term. To be eligible for Gender Inclusive Housing, students apply through the typical housing selection suite and apartment lottery bid process. Interested students must indicate Gender Inclusive Housing on their bid application.
Panther Central will contact gender inclusive bid winners and will manually assign the group after speaking to the group leader. If groups do not win a bid, students are encouraged to participate in General Room Selection at their corresponding time. View more information about the upperclass application and selection process.
Non-guaranteed Upper-class Students
Gender Inclusive Housing options are provided to non-guaranteed students, depending on availability. Students will be placed on a waiting list in the order in which their housing contract and deposit are received. Waiting list students are not guaranteed on-campus accommodations. Students with specific Gender Inclusive Housing requests should contact Panther Central directly upon completion of the housing application.
Vacancies and Room Change Procedures
Vacancies will be filled in accordance with the University’s general process and depending on the style of the room. Vacancies within gender inclusive buildings are filled with students of the same sex-at-birth as the remaining roommate, unless otherwise requested.
Students residing in Gender Inclusive Housing who request a room change mid-semester have two options. Choices include placement in different gender inclusive spaces (if available) or in a room with a roommate of same sex-at-birth. Room changes are intended to be used for emergency purposes and are not approved on a regular basis. If no agreement is made between current roommates regarding the gender of vacant bed space, the University has certain rights. The University has the right to relocate all remaining roommates and fill the apartment as needed.
