Gender Neutral Housing
The University of Pittsburgh and Panther Central value every member of the Pitt community and strive to fully include all students into on campus housing, regardless of sex, gender, gender identity, or expression. Gender Neutral housing options are available to both first-year students and upperclassmen in select buildings consistent with the University’s housing assignment process.
First Year Student Gender Neutral Housing
Gender Neutral housing options are provided to first-year students based upon availability. First-Year students requesting to reside in gender neutral housing are selected and assigned regardless of sex, gender, gender identity or expression. First-Year students with specific gender neutral housing requests or roommate requests should contact Panther Central directly upon admission to the University. More information about our First-Year Student housing application and assignment process can be found here.
Nonguaranteed First Year Students
Gender Neutral housing options are provided to nonguaranteed first-year students based upon availability. Students will be placed on a waiting list in the order in which their housing contract and deposit are received. Waiting list students are not guaranteed on-campus accommodations. Students with specific gender neutral housing requests should contact Panther Central directly upon admission to the University. Notification of possible on-campus housing does not usually occur before late June.
Upperclass Gender Neutral Housing Selection
Gender Neutral housing is available for upperclass students in Ruskin Hall apartments. Housing Selection for upperclass students takes place each Spring Semester. To be eligible for Gender Neutral Housing, Student(s) will apply through the typical housing selection Suite and Apartment lottery bid process and indicate Gender Neutral Housing on their bid application.
Panther Central will contact Gender Neutral bid winners and will manually assign the group after speaking to the group leader. If groups do not win a bid, students are encouraged to participate in General Room Selection at their corresponding time. More information about the upperclass application and selection process can be found here.
Nonguaranteed Upperclass Students
Gender Neutral housing options are provided to nonguaranteed students in Ruskin hall, based upon availability. Students will be placed on a waiting list in the order in which their housing contract and deposit are received. Waiting list students are not guaranteed on-campus accommodations. Students with specific gender neutral housing requests should contact Panther Central directly upon completion of the housing application. Notification of possible on-campus housing does not usually occur before late June.
Vacancies and Room Change Procedures
Dependent upon the style of the room, consistent with the University’s general process, vacancies within gender neutral housing buildings will be filled with students of the same sex-at-birth as the remaining roommate, unless otherwise requested. Students residing in gender neutral housing who request a room change mid-semester have the option to be placed in a different gender neutral space (if available) or placed in a room with a roommate of the same sex-at-birth. Room changes are intended to be used for emergency purposes, and are not approved on a regular basis. If there is not an agreement made with the current roommates in regards to the gender of vacant bedspace, the University has the right to relocate all remaining roommates and fill the apartment as needed.
